The Sri Lankan Geotechnical Society (SLGS) was inaugurated on 27th February 1986, in response to the need felt for a long time by the scientists, engineers and geologists associated with Geotechnical Engineering to provide a forum for exchange and advancement of knowledge in the field of Geotechnical Engineering. With time SLGS has gained recognition as a member of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) thus opening opportunities to participate internationally in the advancement of Geotechnical Engineering, an achievement of another goal set at the time of founding the Society.

SLGS is proud that it has not only active membership that is working for the progress of SLGS' activities befitting the objectives of the Society, but also a large number of former members actively engaged in the Geotechnical Engineering profession both in Sri Lanka and abroad who are making valuable contribution to the SLGS.

SLGS has decided to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of forming SLGS in the year 2007. As a part of this celebration, the First SLGS International Conference on Soil and Rock Engineering along with pre-conference short courses/workshops, technical field trips and exhibits will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 6th through 11th August, 2007. SLGS would like to invite the educators, practitioners and researchers in geo-engineering who work in soil and/or rock engineering disciplines associated with civil, geological, mining, environmental, petroleum and construction engineering projects to participate in the conference and other related activities and to share their novel ideas, new developments, technologies, state-of-the-art practices and experiences. We expect you to benefit in your professional career from the knowledge gained through exchange of information and discussions that would take place at these gatherings.

In conjunction with the conference, a few sightseeing tours are planned to tourist spots to explore the breathtaking diversity of scenery that exist in beautiful Sri Lanka. Thus, SLGS 2007 Colombo will also provide you a great opportunity to explore beautiful Sri Lanka, experience the Sri Lankan culture and the warmth and friendship of Sri Lankans, develop new friendships and renew old friendships with participants from all over the world.

We look forward to welcome you to our beautiful Island in August 2007.
